A: WE’VE ALL HEARD THE ADVERTISEMENT “I HAVE FALLEN AND CAN’T GET UP”, UNFORTUNATELY AN EPISODE LIKE THIS IS VERY COMMON. I have had two friends where this very thing happened. One was saved 3 days later by a concerned neighbor and the other saved by a daughter 2 days after. Today, there are amazing tools that are inexpensive that can help with this type of incident as well as security improvement. Our ‘Smart Model Home” incorporates a security system that has cameras placed strategically around the home. The system is supported through Comcast. We have all had those uncomfortable situations where you have a late night knock on the door. With a system like in our ‘Smart Model Home” you will be able to see who is at the door without opening the door (no more peep holes). One of the more common accidents at home is falling down. The fall can be created by slipping, tripping or simply losing your balance. Careful planning and execution of installing the right products will help prevent such falls. Really think about movements around the outside and inside of your home. Consider the high risk areas. Then apply strategies, techniques and products to help improve your safety. Bathrooms especially the tub and shower are prone to accidents. Anti-skid material on the floors, grab bars and improved lighting will go a long ways to help. Eliminating or minimizing steps around your homes will help prevent tripping. One must plan for the worst. What if your home had a fire? How would you know? Smoke alarms are a must. Escape routes and practicing them will really make a big difference in your safety. Think about the air quality. Radon and carbon monoxide aren’t healthy. Neither is off gassing products that contain nasty chemicals. Pay attention and have a plan to mitigate. Thank you for reading Ask The Builder and making The Columbian a part of your day.
